Best Spark Plugs for Ford Ranger: The Return of America's Midsize Truck

The Ford Ranger returned to the US market in 2019 with a modern turbocharged engine lineup. Here's what to use to keep the Ranger's powertrain in top shape.

2.3L EcoBoost (All Current Rangers)

Every US-spec Ranger from 2019 onward uses the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder. Motorcraft SP-520 is the OEM spark plug specification — the same plug used in the Mustang EcoBoost and Focus RS. These iridium plugs are designed for the 2.3L's direct injection and turbocharging combination.

Service interval: 60,000 miles. Do not stretch significantly beyond this on a boosted engine.

Installation Notes

The 2.3L EcoBoost in the Ranger is mounted transversely in a compact engine bay. Access to the plugs is tight on some models — a flexible extension and universal joint in your socket set makes the job significantly easier.

Older Rangers (Pre-2019)

The previous-generation Ranger (up to 2011) used 2.3L and 4.0L engines. NGK Iridium IX and Champion Iridium are both strong choices for these older applications. Consult the part number for your specific year and engine.

Why OEM Matters on EcoBoost

EcoBoost engines are precision-tuned turbocharged direct-injection units. The plug's heat range, gap, and electrode design all matter more on these engines than on simple naturally aspirated designs. Stick with Motorcraft OEM spec for reliability.
