How to Change an Oil Filter: A DIY Guide

Changing your oil filter is a fundamental part of any oil change — and one of the easiest DIY maintenance tasks you can tackle. Here's how to do it safely and correctly every time.

What You'll Need

  • New oil filter (correct part number for your vehicle)
  • Oil filter wrench (for stubborn filters)
  • Oil drain pan
  • Fresh engine oil
  • Clean rags
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Warm Up the Engine (Slightly)

Running the engine for 2–3 minutes before an oil change helps the oil flow out more completely. Don't run it until fully hot — warm oil is enough and easier to handle.

Step 2: Drain the Old Oil First

Always drain the oil before removing the filter. Removing the filter first on some vehicles causes a large spill. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain completely into your pan.

Step 3: Remove the Old Filter

Spin the filter counterclockwise. It may be tight — use an oil filter wrench if needed. Have your drain pan positioned under it, as oil will spill when it breaks the seal.

Step 4: Prep the New Filter

Lightly coat the new filter's gasket with clean engine oil. This ensures a proper seal and makes removal easier at the next oil change.

Step 5: Install and Tighten

Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the seating surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn. Do NOT use a wrench to tighten — hand tight is correct.

Step 6: Fill with New Oil and Check for Leaks

Reinstall the drain plug, add fresh oil, start the engine and watch for leaks around the filter.
