NGK Iridium IX vs Laser Iridium: What's the Difference?

NGK Iridium IX vs Laser Iridium: What's the Difference?

NGK makes two popular iridium spark plug lines — Iridium IX and Laser Iridium. Both are excellent, but they're designed for different applications. Here's how to choose the right one.

NGK Iridium IX

The Iridium IX is NGK's aftermarket performance iridium plug. Key features:

  • 0.6mm iridium center electrode
  • Trivalent metal plating for anti-corrosion
  • Enhanced ignitability over copper and platinum
  • 60,000-mile service life (typical)
  • Available for a very wide range of vehicles

The Iridium IX is designed as a performance upgrade — it fits vehicles that may have originally used copper or platinum plugs, delivering iridium performance at a reasonable price.

NGK Laser Iridium

The Laser Iridium is NGK's OEM-replacement iridium plug. Key features:

  • Ultra-fine laser-welded iridium center electrode (0.4mm tip)
  • Platinum ground electrode for extended life
  • Factory-match precision — used by Toyota, Honda, Subaru as OEM spec
  • 60,000-mile service life
  • Pre-gapped to OEM specification

If your vehicle came factory-equipped with iridium plugs, the Laser Iridium is the correct OEM-grade replacement. If you're upgrading from copper or platinum to iridium, the Iridium IX is the right choice.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Vehicle originally came with iridium (Toyota, Honda, Subaru): NGK Laser Iridium
