Permatex thread lockers are essential for any serious automotive DIY toolkit. They prevent fasteners from loosening due to vibration — but using the wrong strength for your application can create problems. Here's the definitive guide.
Why Fasteners Loosen
Vibration is the enemy of threaded fasteners. Under repeated cyclic loading, fasteners can back out over time — particularly in the harsh vibration environment of an internal combustion engine. Thread lockers eliminate this by filling the gaps between threads with a cured polymer that prevents rotation.
Permatex Blue (Medium Strength — #242)
Holding strength: ~115 lb-in (13 Nm)
Removable with: Standard hand tools (no heat required)
Best for: Fasteners 1/4" to 3/4" that need to stay put but must be serviceable. Examples: exhaust bolts, suspension hardware, intake manifold bolts, sensor mounting bolts, brake caliper hardware, interior fasteners subject to vibration.
This is the most commonly used thread locker in automotive applications. When in doubt between blue and red, choose blue.
Permatex Red (High Strength — #271)
Holding strength: ~230 lb-in (26 Nm)
Removable with: Heat (450°F+) required for disassembly
Best for: Permanent or semi-permanent fasteners: flywheel bolts, ring gear bolts, press-fit assemblies, any fastener you genuinely don't want to remove. Also for larger fasteners (over 3/4") that blue can't grip effectively.
Other Strengths
Purple (Low Strength #222): Small fasteners under 1/4" — electronics, small screws, instruments. Removes easily by hand.
Green (Wicking #290): Applied after assembly, wicks into already-assembled threads. Useful for fasteners you can't access before installation.
