Rough Idle: Common Causes and How to Fix It

Rough Idle: Common Causes and How to Fix It

A rough idle is annoying, concerning, and often a sign of something that needs attention. The good news: many rough idle causes are inexpensive to diagnose and fix. Here are the most common culprits.

1. Worn Spark Plugs

Old or fouled spark plugs are the #1 cause of rough idle in vehicles past their plug replacement interval. When plugs can't consistently fire the air-fuel mixture, you get uneven combustion — felt as a shake or stumble at idle. Solution: replace all plugs as a set.

2. Faulty Ignition Coil

In coil-on-plug (COP) ignition systems, a failing coil pack on one cylinder causes a single-cylinder misfire that produces a distinctive rough idle. Diagnosis: swap coils between cylinders and see if the misfire code follows the coil.

3. Vacuum Leak

A cracked vacuum hose or failed intake manifold gasket allows unmetered air into the engine, leaning out the mixture and causing rough idle. Listen for a hissing sound near the intake.

4. Dirty or Stuck Idle Air Control Valve

The IAC valve regulates idle speed. When it sticks, idle becomes erratic or rough. Cleaning it with throttle body cleaner often resolves the issue.

5. Dirty Fuel Injectors

Partially clogged injectors create an uneven fuel distribution, leading to misfires and rough idle on affected cylinders. A fuel injector cleaner added to the tank, or professional cleaning, can help.

6. Low Compression

If one cylinder has low compression due to worn rings or valves, it won't fire properly. A compression test identifies this. This is the most serious cause on this list.

Start with spark plugs — it's the most common fix and the least expensive. Shop NGK, Champion, and ACDelco spark plugs at Texan Supply.
