Modern coil-on-plug (COP) ignition systems are more reliable than older distributor setups — but individual coil packs still fail. When one does, the symptoms can range from subtle to severe. Here's what to look for.
Most Common Symptoms
Engine Misfire (P0301–P0308)
A misfire code pointing to a specific cylinder is the most common sign of a failed ignition coil. The cylinder with the bad coil doesn't fire consistently, causing a rough, stumbling idle and poor acceleration.
Rough Idle and Vibration
With one cylinder misfiring, the engine's smoothness deteriorates. You'll feel vibration through the steering wheel and seat, especially at idle.
Loss of Power
One dead or weak cylinder means your engine is effectively down one cylinder in terms of power output. Acceleration feels sluggish, particularly under load.
Poor Fuel Economy
The ECM tries to compensate for the misfiring cylinder by enriching the fuel mixture, which reduces MPG.
How to Diagnose a Bad Coil
The simplest test: swap the suspect coil with one from an adjacent cylinder. If the misfire code moves to the new cylinder, the coil is faulty. If it stays in the same cylinder, look at the spark plug or fuel injector.
Should You Replace One Coil or All?
If one coil failed and your vehicle has high mileage, consider replacing all coils at once. Coils tend to fail around the same mileage — fixing one now and paying labor again in 6 months for another is frustrating.
