The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is a small, inexpensive part that many drivers have never heard of — but it plays an important role in engine health and longevity.
What It Does
During combustion, some exhaust gases blow past the piston rings and into the crankcase (the lower part of the engine that houses the crankshaft and oil). Without ventilation, these gases would build pressure and contaminate the engine oil with acidic combustion byproducts.
The PCV valve routes these "blowby" gases back into the intake manifold to be burned in the combustion chamber rather than released into the atmosphere. It's both an emissions device and an engine protection device.
What Happens When It Fails
- Stuck open: Too much air enters the crankcase, creating a lean condition and rough idle. Oil consumption may increase.
- Stuck closed: Crankcase pressure builds. Oil gets pushed past seals and gaskets, causing leaks. Sludge can form in the oil.
- Either condition can trigger a check engine light
Replacement Interval
Most PCV valves last 30,000–50,000 miles, though some manufacturers recommend longer intervals or don't specify one at all. At 60,000-mile tune-ups, it's worth inspecting or replacing — it typically costs $5–$15 for the part.
