Best Oil Filters for High Mileage Engines
Share
High mileage engines — generally those over 75,000 miles — have unique needs. Worn seals, slightly increased oil consumption, and more contaminants in the oil all mean your oil filter choice matters more, not less, as your vehicle ages.
What Changes in a High Mileage Engine
- Slightly worn cylinder walls and rings produce more metal particles
- Older gaskets and seals may allow minor oil seepage
- More combustion blowby introduces more contaminants into the oil
What to Look for in a High Mileage Filter
Higher Capacity Filter Media
Look for filters with more filter media (larger filters or those with finer filtration). Premium OEM filters from ACDelco and Motorcraft are designed with the appropriate capacity for their respective engines.
Anti-Drainback Valve Quality
The anti-drainback valve keeps oil in the filter when the engine is off, so oil pressure builds immediately on startup. On a high-mileage engine where startup wear is a concern, a quality anti-drainback valve matters.
Consistent OEM Bypass Pressure
The bypass valve in a filter opens when the filter is clogged, routing oil around the filter. OEM filters (ACDelco for GM, Motorcraft for Ford) are calibrated to the correct bypass pressure for their engines.
Our Recommendations
For GM vehicles: ACDelco Professional oil filters. For Ford vehicles: Motorcraft FL-820S or equivalent. Both are engineered for their respective engines and provide excellent filtration.
