Honda Civics are known for their longevity — many surpass 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. One of the most impactful (and often overlooked) services is spark plug replacement. Here's what works best for the Civic's 1.5L turbocharged and 2.0L naturally aspirated engines.
Civic Engine Types and the Right Plugs
1.5L Turbocharged (10th & 11th Gen)
The turbocharged Civic needs plugs that handle heat and pressure well. NGK Laser Iridium plugs are the factory-recommended choice. They're pre-gapped to Honda's specification and offer 60,000-mile service life.
2.0L Naturally Aspirated (Si, Type R base trim)
The non-turbo 2.0L is a bit more forgiving but still benefits from iridium. NGK's standard Iridium IX plugs work excellently here.
Avoid Generic Plugs on the Turbo Civic
Cheap copper or low-grade platinum plugs on the 1.5T can cause misfires under boost. The tight cylinder design leaves little margin for error — stick with quality iridium.
DIY or Shop?
Civic spark plug changes are very DIY-friendly on the 2.0L. The 1.5T is a bit tighter but still manageable with basic tools. Expect 30–60 minutes for someone with basic mechanical experience.
