Mazda's SkyActiv engines are engineering achievements — high compression ratios, excellent thermal efficiency, and refined power delivery. They also have specific spark plug requirements that should be followed closely.
SkyActiv-G 2.0L and 2.5L (4-cylinder)
Mazda's naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G engines run extremely high compression ratios (13:1 and higher on some models). NGK Laser Iridium plugs are OEM spec — specifically designed to deliver reliable ignition at high compression without pre-ignition.
Service interval is 75,000 miles for most Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9 applications.
SkyActiv-G 2.5T Turbocharged
The turbocharged 2.5T found in the CX-5 and CX-9 Signature trim uses a different NGK iridium plug spec with a gap tighter than the naturally aspirated version. Check your owner's manual for the specific part number.
SkyActiv-X (Compression Ignition)
Mazda's innovative SPCCI (Spark Plug Controlled Compression Ignition) engine uses spark plugs in a unique way — they control combustion differently from conventional engines. OEM NGK plugs specifically engineered for this system are the only appropriate choice.
