Best Spark Plugs for Volkswagen and Audi: TDI, TSI, and TFSI Engines
Share
VW and Audi's turbocharged direct-injection engines are among the most popular in the world. The TSI (VW) and TFSI (Audi) engines power everything from the Golf GTI to the A4 Quattro. Here's what to know about spark plug maintenance.
2.0T TSI/TFSI (EA888)
The 2.0T EA888 is the most common engine in this family. NGK ILZKAR8H8 iridium plugs are OEM spec for many applications. The pre-gapped 0.028" gap accommodates the high boost pressure of these turbocharged engines.
1.8T TSI (EA888 Gen 3)
The 1.8T in Jetta, Passat, and other models uses similar NGK iridium spec plugs. Verify your specific engine code to confirm the exact part number.
Avoid Copper Plugs on TSI/TFSI
The direct injection and turbocharging create elevated combustion temperatures. Copper plugs will foul and fail quickly in these engines. Iridium is the minimum acceptable quality for VW/Audi turbocharged engines.
Service Interval
VW/Audi recommend 40,000-mile intervals on many TSI applications — shorter than some competitors due to the demanding nature of the combined DI and turbo combustion environment.
